Wait is THAT why they didn’t have autism in the 60s? Bc they had Elvis?

The “refrigerator mom” hypothesis is so enraging. Mothers respond to their child disliking being touched by not touching them against their will and researchers look at them and said “Hmm, look at how little these autism moms hug their kids. That must be why they’re ’broken’.”

Being forced as a child to tolerate adult hugging has always felt like a mixture of torture and grooming to me.

Back then they believed “refrigerator mothers” caused autism. They thought mothers of autistic kids withheld affection and all autistics needed was to be loved and hugged etc. kinda fucked up

Well Temple Grandid created a therapeutic Hug Machine so while it doesn’t cure autism apparently hugs can have a positive affect

Well heck, if Elvis hadn’t died he might have been able to help me… too bad this doesn’t work with anyone else.

Honestly, if you look back at his mannerisms, they way he spoke/acted and how people spoke of him, there is a high chance Elvis himself was on the spectrum.

Facts: Elvis plays a doctor (healer) named John Carpenter (JC). I don't remember the whole plot but at the end of the movie Mary Tyler Moore, the nun basically realises that Elvis is Jesus complete with a scene of her PPV looking between the crucifix and Elvis with amazement and recognition on her face. She stops being a nun because if she marries him she'll still be a bride of Christ. It’s not to my recollection specifically stated but hugely implied.

I mean, it wouldn't cure it but like, pressure can actually help a lot of autistic people having meltdowns, usually not in the form of a hug but like putting on a weighted blanket or several pillows or something else heavy on top of you but if it's with someone you trust sometimes a hug can actually be very grounding

true story (as told to me by the person who was there): she was was helping someone transition, the woman takes her last breath, heart stops, she’s passed. a minute later she gasps and wakes up and once she catches her breath said elvis was there to greet her and she had to come back to tell her friend who loved elvis! 😂 so yeah, autism, no prob
