**roan.carrhartley** Why it’s always important to stay close to an elephant, or most animals for that matter as they go down under anaesthesia. This bull managed to get his trunk lodged underneath his tusk as he went down for treatment of a poison arrow wound. An elephant’s trunk is its primary airway, so keeping it free and correctly positioned while the animal is immobilised is incredibly important. We had to quickly lift his head enough to free his trunk and make sure his airway wasn’t compromised. In the process, my fingers briefly swapped places with his trunk under the tusk haha. Not the most comfortable position for them given that the head of a big bull can weigh just shy of half a tonne! Thankfully, we got his trunk free quickly and could get on with treating his wound. #elephant #animal #fyp
