KENAN THOMPSON ALMOST CRIED WHEN HE SAW HIMSELF AS PANTHRO IN CHADWICK BOSEMAN'S SNL MONOLOGUE Kenan Thompson Almost Cried When He Saw Himself As Panthro In Chadwick Boseman's SNL Monologue Kenan Thompson is looking back on one of his most personal moments on Saturday Night Live. It happened at a New York Comic Con panel on Sunday. Thompson sat down with SNL makeup artists Louie Zakarian and Jason Milani. His SNL castmate Sarah Sherman hosted the conversation. They talked about the time Thompson dressed as Panthro from ThunderCats. It was April 2018, and Chadwick Boseman was hosting SNL. Thompson's Panthro popped into Boseman's opening monologue, claiming to be the original Black Panther. Thompson said it was his favorite "can I get them to build something crazy that I love personally?" moment. He said he would have been fine even if it was just for him. He also said he refused to look in the mirror until the transformation was finished. Then he saw himself. In his words, "I almost cried because it was my childhood coming to life." Thompson said the moment was also "for the culture." At the time, Boseman was having what Thompson called "such a major movement." Boseman had first played Black Panther in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, and his own Black Panther movie came out in 2018. Boseman had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016. He kept it private until he passed away in 2020. In a 2021 interview, Thompson said Boseman "couldn't have been more nice, gracious, loving, and creative."
