Warren Township, New Jersey. Thousands of cars have passed this tiny green-and-stone cottage. But what exactly was it? For years, nobody seemed to agree. One longtime resident remembered a gasoline pump outside in the 1960s. Another recalled a little general store selling household goods. A neighbor remembered looking through the windows and seeing merchandise still sitting on the shelves. Someone else remembered people actually living inside — and a mysterious community farther up the dirt driveway. Was it a gas station? A caretaker’s cottage? A neighborhood store? An old summer camp? The memories kept coming. And then local historians began digging through century-old property records, newspaper clippings, maps, and the stories of people who grew up nearby. In March 2025, the mystery finally had an answer. The building had been known as the Freedom Hill General Store, part of a remarkable community established in 1918 by 35 families connected to the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. Among its organizers was Sebastian Liberty, a Jewish refugee whose family had immigrated from Romania. Behind the little roadside building were a meeting and educational center and five summer cottages where visitors could stay. Local historian Alan Siegel also documented the property’s use as a Jewish summer camp during the 1920s and 1930s. The tiny building later served as a real estate office. And more than a century after Freedom Hill began, the little green cottage still stands beside Hillcrest Road. A forgotten store. A summer retreat. A community built around working families. All hidden behind one ordinary-looking roadside building. Sometimes the smallest places hold the biggest stories. Historical research: Mr. Local History Project, with memories shared by local residents. #WarrenNJ #SomersetCountyNJ #NewJerseyHistory #HiddenHistory #NJMemories
