Apple has removed several of Russia's most widely used applications from its App Store, sparking fury inside the Kremlin and leaving Moscow with little ability to respond. Apple says the move enforces international sanctions, yet VK, the Russian technology company behind the affected apps, maintains that it was never sanctioned. The distinction matters: while VK itself faces no formal restrictions, its chief executive, Vladimir Kiriyenko, is personally sanctioned by the United States, the European Union, and the United Kingdom, giving Apple grounds to treat the company as off-limits. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov branded Apple untrustworthy and encouraged Russians to abandon iPhones for Android devices. The deeper irony is that the removal may serve Moscow's interests. The Russian government had already spent months steering citizens toward domestically built, state-aligned applications, and Apple's decision now accelerates that push, handing the Kremlin an unexpected advantage in its long campaign for "digital sovereignty".
