@outdoorwiseliving: Could hiking after the rain > dangerous than when it rains? And that’s something I wish more west coast hikers realized: After a major storm, trails will look completely different. Creeks that were easy to cross can become dangerous, saturated hillsides can slide, trees and branches can fall. And a beautiful waterfall hike can become a serious hazard. Before hiking after heavy rain, ask yourself: 1. What water might I need to cross? 2. What’s above me that could fall? 3. What’s underneath me that could move? And remember, sunshine doesn’t mean the danger has passed. Water levels can remain elevated long after the rain stops, especially when storms hit upstream. This is why I keep a separate list of hikes for after storms, and check conditions before heading out. Send this to someone you hike with. It might change how they plan their next adventure. #HikingSafety #CaliforniaHiking #AfterTheRain #WinterHiking #TrailSafety
Also consider areas prone to flash flooding which could cause washouts (both of the trail, and the road to the trail). I'm thinking about the flooding that closed US-2 in WA last year.
