Out of the box this tool feels well made and solid. I was immediately impressed with the workmanship. But as a practical matter, I'm not sure it's a tool I'll use a lot. For one thing, all the mill holes are metric sizes, from 8 mm to 20 mm not in any particular order. I took a piece of 3/8" birch dowel, put it my cordless driver, and shoved it through the 8 mm hole. It easily rounded the 3/8" to 8mm and although it did not have the smoothness of the original dowel, it was acceptable. The first two photos above show the results. Next, I took a piece of 1/2" square stock. How to get it in the driver chuck? I ended up sanding one end of the square stock on a belt sander down to a diameter that I could get in the driver chuck (see photo four above). That worked okay, but it's tricky getting that end turned down so the piece doesn't wobble all over the place as it spins. I was able to get the 1/2" stock to go through the 16mm hole and that rounded off the edges, but it wasn't yet a dowel. I adjusted the cutter to the 15mm hole and rounded the edges a little more, but it still wasn't a dowel. I was able to push the piece through the 12mm hole and I finally had a dowel (see the last photo above). From there I could go 10, 9 or 8 mm. The tool that comes with the device for loosening the cutter or changing the blade is probably not going to hold up. I had to change the cutter head several times to get the square stock turned down and the screw heads are torx sized at T20. The tool, however, at that size is plastic, though the other end is metal and smaller for the screw tightening the cutter blade. I could see after a couple of cutter changes that the plastic tool wasn't going to hold up even though the screws do not have to be tightened very much. As others have pointed out, there are no instructions with this tool, but it seems pretty intuitive and I didn't really have any trouble using it. I mounted it on a piece of scrap wood and put it in the vise on my bench. From there you just have to figure out which size hole you can push your piece through. Personally, if I was to be making dowels a lot, I'd prefer a tool where the cutter does the turning, not the piece being turned. That, of course , is a different kind of tool, probably with its own electric motor. And I'd expect to have to pay a lot more. For the price, I'd say this is a handy little gadget.
