@thematmag: Your favorite band might be SECRETLY injecting retro games or even ANIME into their music, and you might not even realize it! Do you know any bands that are super into stuff like that/prevalent in their work or art? A notable example is Mac DeMarco loving 90s games like Final Fantasy 6 (from this meme) and projecting an Earthbound (one of our top 10 favorite games ever) playthrough during his live sets years ago. He even showed off the game on a cool tour of his house in a great interview (we’ll have more on that later). If you’re a fan of the games, music, or even Mac himself and curious why he likes these games so much, check out legendary @SquareEnix musician (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger etc) Nobou Uematsu as he plays on Halloween via @Goldenvoice at @thenovodtla (represented by @virginmusicJP / @ユニバーサルミュージック洋楽) Another great example via The Garden, is their samples of Twisted Metal (the Playstation franchise) multiple times in their discography! The start of “Banned From Paradise” in this post contains a direct quote from the game! Some of their side projects include various video game inspirations, other direct quotes, or samples as well! All this stuff was all on our minds recently when we saw Have A Nice Life live in Colorado, (slide 3) where their sets are known to include walking out to Evangelion’s opening theme song, “Cruel Angel’s Thesis” and a play through of Secret of Mana (another one of our favorite games!) you can read all about it in the link in our bio. The influx of retro gaming, vintage anime, and all things Japanese is partly due to the age of these musicians, partly due to how damn cool all these media hits are, and partly due to the charm and style of stuff from the 90s. For REAL FANS we’ve got more info as an iceberg tip dance for our paid substack. It’s free for first time readers too! The normal articles are always free tho. Just a little something extra for the die hards ❤️ 📸 @sashairivarren (Instagram) of photo 3 #thegarden #macdemarco #haveanicelife #fletchershears #wyattshears
