Ever wanted to come face to face with a Late Cretaceous ocean predator? Come find me & fellow colleagues in the Academy in Action Lab here at @Academy of Natural Sciences to check out the work we are doing on this (reconstructed) cast skull of Styxosaurus! It’s not just fossils that get the treatment here but objects like casts - especially ones as old as this - also need some TLC from time to time. Some cool facts about Styxosaurus snowii (and Elasmosaurids) for Fossil Friday: 🦴 Our cast is of the skull KUVP 1301 (holotype housed at @Univ of Kansas Natural History Museum). 🦴 A member of Elasmosauridae (which is within Plesiosauria). 🦴 The geology of the holotype location is that of the Smoky Hill Chalk Member (Niobrara Formation) in the Campainian Age of the Cretaceous Period. This dates the holotype specimen to around 83-72 mya, but other species of Styxosaurus and members of Elasmosauridae have been found within a broad range of 130-66 mya! 🦴 The type was found and described in 1890, is known from a well preserved (but crushed) skull and about 29-30 neck vertebrae! This number of verts has changed over the years and publications as the specimen continues to be reassessed. 🦴 You can see a full reconstructed cast of ANSP’s very own Elasmosaurus platyurus on display over the Parkway Desk. 🦴 The real fossils of E. platyurus (ANSP 10081) are stored in our holotype cabinet up in Vertebrate Palaeontology. 🦴 And yes… our Elasmosaurus was part of the beginning of the Bone Wars. E.D. Cope put the head on the tail and then O.C. Marsh corrected him.
