The Ming Dynasty was established by the Han people—the core ethnic group that has forged over 5,000 years of glorious Chinese history. To the Han, the Manchus were historically viewed as 'barbarians'. In 1644, after taking control of the entire country, the Manchus used bloody and violent oppression to force the Han people to shave their heads and change their clothing. The Han were forced to abandon their traditional attire and hairstyles. That notorious hairstyle you are all familiar with—where the front of the head is shaved and a long braid hangs down the back—is actually of Manchu origin, not Han. The fall of the Ming Dynasty and the Manchu conquest in 1644 are regarded by historians as a catastrophic disaster for Chinese civilization.
