@slate: Vince Granata’s mother was killed by her son—Vince’s brother, Tim—in 2014. The following year, Vince attended his brother’s trial where a prosecutor detailed the tragedy, and provided a slew of evidence; bagged knives, a coroner’s report, bodycam footage of Tim wailing “I hope she isn’t dead,” to prove that Tim had committed this crime. There was no doubt Tim was the assailant; this trial was to determine if he had been in control of his mind. So when Lindsay Clancy’s trial dominated the country’s news outlets this past summer and the scrutiny around Clancy’s mental health grew, Granata naturally saw parallels between his family’s case and Clancy’s. “It’s not surprising that Clancy’s trial captured our attention. When faced with an ‘un’ crime—one that is unimaginable, unfathomable, unbearable—it’s in our nature to theorize how mental illness may have played a part. We want to know why, for an explanation and verdict to deliver catharsis. But then, we want to move on. Absent a horrific crime or the plot twists of a cinematic trial, serious mental illness rarely makes news. We neglect the larger crisis that persists between these flashpoints.” In an essay for Slate, Granata shares what came to be of his brother and what is still missing from the national conversation on mental illness. 🔗 Visit the link in the bio to read the full essay. #storytime #MentalHealth #truecrime #lindsayclancy

Senior here. Reagan was the President that reduced a huge portion of mental health hospitals.

There’s a documentary about how overfilled and just inhumane these mental asylums were in the 60s. I can’t remember the name.

We are in a mental health crisis. It’s deeper than a shortage of beds but copious amounts of patients. Something needs to be done in this country to change the trajectory.

And sadly, when large populations DO bother to pay attention and learn about these incidents without being personally involved, and speak up in public platforms, they get dismissed as parasocial. So nothing changes even when people care.

Schizophrenia? I’m sorry. These make me sad. No one wins but the lawyers on both sides.
