@cdkidwell04: Fargo, North Dakota. September 19, 2026. A college football game. Mayville State quarterback Matthew Donovan took a helmet-to-helmet hit in the third quarter. He walked off the field under his own power. Minutes later, everything changed. He was life-flighted to Sanford Medical Center. Emergency brain surgery followed. Surgeons removed portions of his skull to relieve dangerous pressure. Matthew is 23 years old. He has been in a coma since that night. Three weeks of small, careful progress. His eyes opening longer. A thumbs-up on command. Purposeful movement in his right arm. Two successful breathing trials. Each one held up by his family as proof that their son is still fighting. He has not fully awakened. Then Friday afternoon, his father Terry posted. "What a great day. Today, we moved the chains in a BIG way." After two days of fighting through insurance authorization, Matthew has been approved for transfer to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals in Lincoln, Nebraska. If his bloodwork holds Monday morning, he gets on a plane. Madonna is one of the leading brain and spinal cord rehabilitation centers in the United States. It is the next step in a recovery that nobody can fully map yet. His family does not know how much he will recover. They do not know what the road ahead looks like. They know a door has opened. His mother Tina has said the same thing throughout these three weeks. She misses two words more than anything. Hey Mama. That is still what this family is waiting for. Elementary schools across North Dakota have held fundraisers. Kids have sent drawings. A GoFundMe has raised over $118,000. Mayville State played their first home game back with his name on every mind. Matt Donovan has been showing people what he can do his entire life. He is not done yet. 🔗 in comments to read full story and support Matthew's recovery.
