@treatmyocd: @rainn wilson. and @Howie Mandel have both been open about living with OCD. Bringing them together on our Get to Know OCD podcast gave us the chance to hear two people speak candidly about what the same disorder has looked and felt like in their own lives. One of the things that comes through in this conversation is just how much mental space OCD can take up. Howie and Rainn agree that the rest of your life doesn’t stop while you’re dealing with intrusive thoughts and compulsions. You still have work, relationships, responsibilities, plans, and all the other things that come with being human, while OCD can be demanding your attention at the same time. We especially like this clip because Howie and Rainn’s thoughts and experiences aren’t identical. You might relate more to what Rainn describes, what Howie describes, or parts of both. OCD can show up differently from person to person, and hearing people talk openly about those differences can help more people recognize their own experiences and feel less alone in them. Rainn has also shared that he went through ERP therapy and was able to get his OCD under control, showing that even when OCD feels all-consuming, getting better is possible. If intrusive thoughts and compulsions are interfering with the life you want to live, specialized treatment can help. I think this is the first time I’ve recognized my own OCD patterns in someone else’s story. I also call it loops. Thought loops that can and often branches out into their own loops. If I’m not careful, the loops all combine into one giant spiral, of EVERYTHING the loops are looping.

I tried explaining my obsessive thinking to a friend without OCD and the best analogy I could come up with was it’s like being zipped in a mental sleeping bag and I can’t unzip myself

This video looping in the background while Howie is saying a thought loops in the background itches a weird scratch. It was my soundtrack while putting away my journal and markers. Haha. But I hope someone recognizes their own pure OCD from this description because realizing what that brain activity is helps people to realize that there’s another way to live that isn’t the loop.

This is so welcoming to hear, people need to speak about OCD so much more and get people to understand it more! As someone who suffers with OCD, it helps me feel less alone ❤️
