According to reports published by the New York Post on October 11, 2026, Los Angeles Fire Department crews rushed to the 6900 block of Pacific Avenue at approximately 8:18 a.m. after receiving reports of a person in distress in the water. Lifeguards attempted to save the man and performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities said no foul play was suspected. The tragedy came as powerful waves and severe weather battered the Southern California coastline following Tropical Storm Rachel. In Long Beach, enormous waves damaged the historic waterfront boardwalk, tearing wooden sections apart and sending seawater over the remaining structure. Officials restricted access to the damaged area as crews worked to protect vulnerable sections of the coast. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson also reported that eight structures on the city's Peninsula had been marked unsafe to enter, while another received a warning allowing residents limited access to retrieve belongings.
