The USTA expanded influencer media credentials years ago to boost social media reach and drive real digital marketing ROI for the U.S. Open and the sport of tennis overall. But when the internet decided to throw a fit about "tennis etiquette," look at who became the face of the backlash.  There’s a real conversation about respecting the game, having etiquette and acting accordingly but there’s more to the story. The overwhelming majority of credentialed creators, corporate guests, and suite attendees at Arthur Ashe are white. Yet, the images endlessly circulated online to weaponize "decorum" disproportionately center Black faces. This a form of digital gatekeeping. Tennis has a long, documented history of systemic racism, from the days when the USLTA explicitly barred Black players from national championships, to the way Black athletes like Serena, Naomi, and Coco face harsh scrutiny for simply existing in the space. Brands invite us out, hand us content briefs, and offer zero onboarding on unwritten tournament rules. But when friction happens, white attendees are treated as individuals, while Black attendees are policed as "uncultured" outsiders. Stop using diverse creators for clout and engagement while leaving your Black guests to bear the brunt of a manufactured, racialized outrage. #USOpen #BlackTikTok #influencers #tennis
