Just a quick 10-mile stroll with a pole stuck in his side. David Cifaldi was crossing Montana’s Froze-to-Death Plateau when his hiking trip took an unexpected turn. The 32-year-old slipped and impaled himself on his 44-inch steel-tipped trekking pole. The walking aide pierced the flesh beneath the nurse’s left arm – luckily missing any vital organs – and came out his back. After talking over options with his companions, Mr Cifaldi decided to walk himself off the mountain, a six-and-a-half-hour trip. While getting search and rescue to the scene is free, Mr Cifaldi noted that getting flown off the side of a mountain is not: “So that was obviously a factor in me deciding to self-rescue,” he later explained. Mr Cifaldi was also confident the injury wasn’t that bad, having conducted a self-assessment. He was alert and there was little pain or blood. “Tis but a flesh wound,” he concluded. The trio navigated down the mountain – via an unmarked route – descending roughly 5,000 feet, and walking around 10 miles, to where one of their friends was parked. Mr Cifaldi’s friend, Jesse Ross said: “The only reason it was possible at all was his confidence.” When the group eventually got to the nearest clinic, it was determined that Mr Cifaldi needed more specialist care, so they had to proceed to the nearest hospital. Doctors removed the pole, bandaged him up and Mr Cifaldi was back at work this week.
