It’s the International Date Line. Pretty sure we learned about it in 6th grade.

The sun hits the area of earth where Japan is before it hits the rest of the world. This is because the earth spins eastwards, so eastern countries begin their day as the western countries begin their nights

The sun rises there and sets here, that’s why.

NZer here! The answer Frankie is looking for here is: The Pacific Ocean! Within a rounding error, nobody lives east of us for half the planet, so having the new day start here doesn't involve neighboring countries being on different dates. Who decided this? Some people, ages ago.

He's right, you could put the international date line wherever you want. Japan is only in the East because we made up lines that say it is.

Are they trying to say who determined the international dateline?

I see his point but because of the international date line (exactly opposite the prime meridian) as soon as you cross it you go back one whole day. I wonder if that's where old superman movies got the "time travel by spinning around the earth" idea

It would be 8 hours behind if the sun rose in the east and set in the west. Its based on earths rotation where the perceived “location” of the sun goes from west to east, which is right to left on earth axis, and so it starts on the right, where most modern maps place japan all the way on the right

because we in England own time and people are 12 hours ahead of us to the east and 12 hours behind in the west.

I understand what he meant. Like how did they determine that “this” is where the sun STARTS the next day. Like how come we aren’t the ones ahead and they are (not because we have to be ahead but just like the logic of why) but I get why that’s confusing to put into words haha
