When an alleged abuser is released on bond, what safeguards are in place for the people closest to him? The Seth and Heather Thompson case raises a much larger conversation about domestic violence, coercive control, and the potential dangers that can arise when someone accused of abuse faces a loss of control. Research and documented cases have shown that separation, exposure, and perceived loss of control can be dangerous periods in abusive relationships. In some extreme cases, family annihilation has occurred in the context of domestic violence and controlling behavior. To be absolutely clear: I am NOT suggesting that Seth Thompson intends to harm anyone, nor am I predicting that he will. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. My concern is about the broader issue of risk assessment, victim safety, and whether our justice system adequately considers patterns of coercive control when making bond decisions. Protecting the presumption of innocence and prioritizing the safety of potential victims should never be mutually exclusive.
