I went through things as a child that no child should ever have to understand. Abuse. Neglect. Pain. Feeling alone. Having to grow up before I was ready. Having to become independent because I learned early that sometimes the people who are supposed to protect you are the same people who hurt you. For a long time, pain was so normal to me that I confused it with love. I thought being hurt meant someone cared. I thought surviving everything without complaining made me strong. I carried wounds into adulthood that I didn’t even realize were still bleeding. And because of that pain, I made mistakes. I reacted from trauma. I loved from trauma. I trusted from trauma. I pushed people away, held on too tightly, accepted things I shouldn’t have accepted, and made decisions I wish I could go back and change. I take accountability for the things I’ve done wrong. My past explains parts of me, but it doesn’t excuse everything. Still, when I look at the woman I became, I sometimes have to ask myself… after everything that happened to me, did I turn out okay? And I think I did. Not perfect. Not untouched. Not without scars. But I’m still here. And one promise I made to myself was that I would try with everything in me not to make my children feel the way I felt growing up. I know I haven’t been a perfect mother. I have made mistakes. There are moments I wish I could take back, things I wish I handled differently, and times when my own pain affected the way I parented. That truth hurts me. But my children will never have to wonder if I abandoned them. They will never have to wonder if I stopped loving them. Even on my hardest days, even when I’m exhausted, overwhelmed, hurting, or fighting battles inside myself, I will keep showing up for them. I will keep learning. I will keep apologizing when I’m wrong. I will keep trying to heal the parts of me that were hurt long before they were born. Because they deserve a mother who keeps trying. I cannot go back and save the little girl I was from everything she went through. But I can honor her by becoming the woman she needed. And I can love my children in all the ways I once needed to be loved. Maybe breaking generational trauma isn’t about getting everything right. Maybe it’s about looking at the pain you inherited and saying, “It stops with me.” I have made mistakes. I still have healing to do. I am still learning how to be the woman and mother I want to be. But I will never stop trying. My children deserve that. And so did the little girl I used to be. ❤️‍🩹
