🚨 Unpopular opinion… I don’t think I could have convicted Scott Peterson. I’ve followed this case since day one. Long before podcasts, Netflix documentaries, and YouTube deep dives, I was completely invested in the evidence. I even helped purchase the trial transcripts and spent countless hours reading them myself. I was part of the old Websleuths community alongside Marlene Newell, digging through witness statements, timelines, forensic evidence, and trial testimony. After all these years, my opinion hasn’t changed. Not because I know Scott Peterson is innocent… But because I don’t believe the prosecution proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Now, more than 20 years later, the Los Angeles Innocence Project says it has new evidence supporting Scott Peterson’s claim of actual innocence and is asking the courts to review evidence they believe was overlooked or never fully investigated. Some of the issues they’re raising include: 🟠 The burned orange van. The Innocence Project has sought DNA testing on evidence recovered from a burned van, including a bloodstained mattress, arguing modern testing could identify who was actually connected to that evidence—or eliminate it as a lead. 🧬 Additional DNA testing. They are asking for modern forensic testing on multiple pieces of evidence that either weren’t tested or couldn’t be tested with today’s technology at the time of trial. 📹 Witnesses and timelines. The defense has continued to argue that witness sightings and other investigative leads deserved additional scrutiny and could support an alternate timeline. ⚖️ The death sentence itself was overturned. In 2020, the California Supreme Court unanimously overturned Scott Peterson’s death sentence—not because it found him innocent, but because the trial judge made significant errors during jury selection by improperly dismissing prospective jurors based on their views about capital punishment. The court found those errors undermined Peterson’s right to an impartial jury during the penalty phase. His convictions remained in place, and he was later resentenced to life without parole. For me, this has never been about whether Scott Peterson is likable. It’s about whether every lead was followed, every piece of evidence was explored, and whether guilt was proven beyond a reasonable doubt. There are legitimate questions that modern science can answer, I think we should want those answers. So I’m curious… If you knew everything that’s come out over the last 20 years, could you have voted guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? Will you be watching the new documentary breaking down the new evidence? 🏡 Mortgage Loan Officer by day. 🔎 True crime nerd by night. One investigation pays the bills… the other just feeds my curiosity. If you’re buying a home or refinancing, I’d love the opportunity to help. Feel free to message me anytime—I would be honored to earn your business.
