Full ep: “The Future of SEO: Lily Ray on Google Updates, AI Search & GEO Spam” - Ep 987 of The Edward Show podcast. Lily Ray: Google Helpful Content Update went way too far. They hit a lot of sites in really dramatic ways that probably didn't deserve to lose 85, 95% their visibility in Google search, and still to this day, can't get it back. In 2022, before the helpful content update, I felt it coming because like I've dealt with Penguin and Panda and Medic and all these other big updates over the years. There were a lot of sites that were using very similar approaches to SEO that were working really well. We were also in the early days of AI generated content. There were some companies that were allowing their clients to start experimenting with producing lots of content really quickly with AI or optimizing content with AI, or using these very clickbaity titles where it's like, “10 things that do this and that,” then a little bracket that's like you'll never believe number seven. Everyone's doing that, it's working well, it's increasing click-through rates, it's driving a lot of SEO traffic. But then you start to hear the backlash where there's publications like The Verge saying “We hate SEO, SEO's ruining Google, we're having a bad experience.” When Google starts to get a lot of public pressure like that, that their results are not good, they take really dramatic action. I think we're in the early days of that with AI search right now, which is why I think the listicles are the first clue. My big takeaway from the helpful content update is that even if you're doing something that does really, really well with SEO, when everyone else starts doing it, you start to have the average user like “This is annoying, it's ruining my experience on Google,” Google takes countermeasures that are more aggressive than they need to. Google says, “These are the patterns that we're seeing in these sites that are doing way too much for SEO that have lost authenticity with users.” #searchengineoptimization #seo #generativeengineoptimization #answerengineoptimization
