Sometimes the smallest acts of kindness become powerful simply because nobody expected anyone to stop. In March 2020, Officer Michael Rivers of the Goldsboro Police Department in North Carolina noticed a homeless woman sitting near the roadside wearing a shirt that read, "Homeless. The fastest way of becoming a nobody." Rivers had worked in the community for years and recognized many of the people experiencing homelessness there, but he had never seen her before. After initially driving past, he said something made him turn around and ask whether she had eaten that day. She told him she hadn't. Rivers went to a nearby restaurant, bought pepperoni and cheese pizza, and came back to sit beside her on the grass. The woman, who introduced herself as Michelle, later said she had expected him to simply hand her food and leave, but instead he stayed and ate with her for around 45 minutes. The two talked about their lives, including Michelle's family and the challenges she was facing. The moment only became public because a passerby, Cassie Lea Parker, happened to see them while on her own lunch break and took a photograph. Her friend Chris Barnes later shared it online, where it spread rapidly. Michelle told local news that what affected her most wasn't simply receiving a meal, but being treated with dignity. She said Rivers had made her feel "like a citizen." Rivers later explained that he hadn't done anything for attention. He simply felt compelled to go back and spend time with someone who might otherwise have felt invisible.
