Did you know that severe liver damage can develop within days or weeks, even in someone who was previously healthy? This life threatening condition is sometimes called fulminant hepatitis. It can progress to acute liver failure and requires emergency medical treatment. What Is Fulminant Hepatitis? Fulminant hepatitis is a term used for severe, rapidly progressing liver inflammation that can cause the liver to suddenly lose its ability to function. The liver normally helps to: 👉 Remove toxins from the blood. 👉 Process medicines and nutrients. 👉 Produce proteins needed for blood clotting. 👉 Regulate blood sugar. When the liver fails, these important functions become affected. What Can Cause It? Several conditions can cause severe liver injury and acute liver failure. 1. Viral Hepatitis 👉 Hepatitis A 👉 Hepatitis B 👉 Hepatitis E 👉 Hepatitis D (in people who also have hepatitis B) 2. Medication Toxicity 👉 Paracetamol overdose 👉 Certain prescription medications 👉 Some herbal remedies and supplements 3. Autoimmune Hepatitis The immune system mistakenly attacks the liver. 4. Other Causes 👉 Wilson’s disease (a condition causing copper buildup) 👉 Severe reduction in blood supply to the liver 👉 Certain poisonous mushrooms and other toxins ‼️ Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore❌ Symptoms may include:👇👇 1. Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice). 2. Severe tiredness or weakness. 3. Persistent nausea and vomiting. 4. Pain in the upper right abdomen. 5. Unusual bruising or bleeding. 6. Confusion, unusual behaviour or excessive sleepiness. 7. Reduced consciousness or coma in severe cases. Confusion, unusual drowsiness or bleeding in someone with acute liver illness requires emergency assessment. Can It Happen Without Warning? Yes. 📌 Some people initially experience mild symptoms such as tiredness, nausea or loss of appetite. 📌 Their condition can then deteriorate rapidly as liver function worsens. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve: 👉 Medicines to treat the underlying cause. 👉 Intensive monitoring and supportive care. 👉 Treatment of complications. 👉 Emergency liver transplantation in severe cases. Some patients recover completely, while others develop life-threatening complications. How Can You Reduce Your Risk? 👉 Get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B when recommended. 👉 Avoid taking more than the recommended dose of paracetamol. 👉 Avoid unregulated herbal remedies and supplements. 👉 Practise safer sex and avoid sharing needles. 👉 Seek medical assessment for suspected hepatitis or unexplained jaundice. 👉 Get appropriate treatment for existing liver conditions. 📌 Fulminant hepatitis is rare, but it can be fatal without urgent treatment. 📌 Not everyone with hepatitis develops liver failure. 📌 However, recognising the warning signs early can save lives. 📌 Disclaimer: This is for general health education only and is not intended to diagnose, treat or provide personalised medical advice.
