Here are the top five, from a nationwide survey by the Japan Press Research Institute released on October 10: 1. China — 32.5% 2. United States — 26.8% 3. Russia — 18.3% 4. North Korea — 9.1% 5. Iran — 1.9% Two years ago, only 6.6% of Japanese picked America. Last year, it was about 17.5%. This year it jumped another 9.3 points — and passed Russia, which had topped the survey in previous years. China rose too, up 8.2 points, from second place to first. The United States is Japan's only treaty ally. Under that treaty, America is committed to defending Japan if it is ever attacked. Around 50,000 American troops are stationed across Japan, many of them on Okinawa. The same survey found 76.7% of respondents are worried about a possible Taiwan emergency. It ran from July 17 to August 16, and 2,676 people aged 18 and over responded. Some will say Japan is turning on the country that protects it.
