You still have time to grow buckwheat as a summer cover crop! This is my 1st year experimenting with cover crops & my buckwheat cover crop bed is one if my favorite beds in the garden🌾🌸out of all the flowers I’m growing this is the one that has the most pollinators & beneficial insects🐝🐞 if you have a space in your garden you’re not planting/want to get it prepped for fall planting I highly recommend seeding buckwheat It took me 15 minutes to seed this 3ft x 44ft bed, rake in the seeds, & water them in & just like magic a month later the buckwheat is over 4ft tall! I don’t irrigate this bed cover crops are extremely drought tolerant. I’ve been using the flowers as filler flower in bouquets, & I’ll cut this entire bed down soon & use the biomass as mulch for the garden to protect & feed the soil. I used the @Botanical Interests cover crop buckwheat seed shaker & still have a ton of seeds left! I got them on the @Epic Gardening website use code “chelsgrows” to save on seeds💌 Here’s what the epic gardening website says about buckwheat as a overcrop: “Buckwheat has been used for centuries to improve soil health and smother common weeds. It grows better than most cover crops in poor soils and is better at retrieving phosphorus, a macro-nutrient that contributes to later crops' root, flower, and fruit growth. Buckwheat not only grows quickly, it also breaks down quickly in the soil, allowing for planting in the same area just 3 to 4 weeks after incorporating it into the soil. It can also be used as mulch on the soil surface. If allowed, white flowers will form about 35 days after sowing and are loved by beneficial insects and even make pretty filler in bouquets! Turn buckwheat into soil before seeds begin forming. Because buckwheat is cold sensitive, it is grown spring to fall frost, except in mild climates that may be warm enough to grow into fall and possibly winter.” #covercrop #buckwheat #gardentok #soilhealth #farmtok
