Social Security just announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027 — and if you receive benefits or are planning for retirement, there’s more to know than just the headline number. Here’s what the 2027 changes mean: • 3.6% COLA: Social Security benefits will increase by 3.6%, the largest COLA since 2023. • About $75 more per month: The average retired-worker benefit is projected to increase from roughly $2,095 to $2,170 per month beginning with January 2027 benefits. • Higher taxable wage cap: The maximum amount of earnings subject to Social Security payroll tax increases to $192,300 in 2027. • Higher earnings-test limits: If you claim Social Security before full retirement age and continue working, you can earn more before benefits are temporarily withheld. The 2027 limits increase to $25,560, or $67,920 during the year you reach full retirement age, with special rules applying before the month you reach FRA. • SSI increases too: The maximum federal SSI payment rises to $1,029 per month for an individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple. One number I’m still watching closely is the 2027 Medicare Part B premium. For retirees who have their Medicare premium deducted from Social Security, a higher Part B premium can eat into some of the COLA increase. That’s why I don’t look at a COLA announcement as simply “a 3.6% raise.” The number that really matters is how much more actually lands in your pocket after Medicare premiums, taxes and your own rising expenses. For anyone approaching retirement, this is also a good reminder that Social Security should be part of a larger income plan—not the entire plan. Save this post for your 2027 retirement planning and share it with someone who receives Social Security. #SocialSecurity #RetirementPlanning #FinancialIndependence #PersonalFinance #RetirementTips
