@ebeebiebby: IS THIS WHITE PRIVILEGE? OR ARE WE LOOKING AT SOMETHING ELSE? ㅤ Michael Gove edits The Spectator. And The Spectator published article after article criticising Professor Jason Arday, the Black Cambridge academic. Look at the headlines. Some questioned his academic credibility. Others attacked the institutions and diversity policies associated with his appointment. And the coverage continued after his death. ㅤ Now look at another Oxbridge academic. Dr Lola Salem, an Oxford University lecturer and Michael Gove's reported former girlfriend. She has been charged with possessing indecent images of children. She denies the charges and is awaiting trial. Oxford's Oriel College has suspended her pending the proceedings. ㅤ This is not about declaring anyone guilty. It is about the media. Why did Jason Arday attract so much critical attention from The Spectator? And why have we not seen comparable coverage of Lola Salem from the same publication? Especially when its editor reportedly had a personal relationship with her? ㅤ Perhaps there is an editorial explanation. But that explanation deserves scrutiny too. If the lecturer facing these charges were Black, would the headlines look different? Would we see debates about diversity, university standards and institutional failure? Is this white privilege? #JasonArday #MichaelGove #protectchildren #TheSpectator #WhitePrivilege
