For any problem in China, there's one phone number to call. And dialing it triggers a chain reaction that very many times ends up affecting policymaking and bringing about change. 12345 is a government service hotline that receives, in Beijing for example, about 70,000 calls every day. People call seeking assistance, filing complaints, offering suggestions, asking questions, expressing dissatisfaction (or satisfaction). No issue is too small or too big. And every issue gets addressed by the relevant local department, with consequences if they slacked. The hotline is one of the direct ways that the public in China, foreigners like me included, offer feedback, communicate with authorities and get their problems resolved (like actually solved!) When so much individual input gets processes through the same platform, and provided there's political will for reform (and if you know anything about China, you know this exists), patterns start to emerge: recurring complaints and common pain points. And these become the base for the city's authorities to enhance services or improve regulations based on the actual demands and needs of its residents. It's not just about fixing a problem, but fixing an entire category of problems. I find that people outside of China often can't fathom just how responsive the government is to public feedback. And so, in this video I explain the mechanics of 12345 in Beijing, where I've been living for very many years, and how eventually it's a trust-building mechanism, because nothing is better than knowing your voice is actually heard! #chinatiktok #hotline #feedback #publicopinion #governance
