England's history began to take shape during the Anglo-Saxon period, when the Kingdom of Wessex emerged as one of the most powerful kingdoms in southern Britain. During the 9th century, King Alfred the Great defended Wessex against Viking invasions and strengthened its government and education. His successors gradually united several Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, and in the 10th century, England became a unified kingdom. However, Viking invasions continued, and in 1016, the Danish king Cnut the Great conquered England and established a North Sea empire. Anglo-Saxon rule was restored in 1042, but it ended in 1066 when William the Conqueror of Normandy defeated King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings. Following the Norman Conquest, England developed a powerful monarchy and a feudal system. In 1215, King John was forced to accept the Magna Carta, which limited royal authority. During the Middle Ages, England fought France in the Hundred Years' War and experienced the Wars of the Roses, a struggle for the throne between rival noble families. In 1485, Henry VII founded the Tudor dynasty, bringing greater stability. Under Henry VIII, England broke with the Roman Catholic Church in the 1530s and established the Church of England. His daughter Elizabeth I later oversaw a period of cultural achievement and the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. In 1603, James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne as James I, uniting the crowns of England and Scotland under one monarch. Political and religious tensions later led to the English Civil War in the 1640s, resulting in the execution of Charles I and the temporary establishment of a republic under Oliver Cromwell. The monarchy was restored in 1660, and the Glorious Revolution of 1688 strengthened Parliament's authority. During the 18th and 19th centuries, England became the center of the Industrial Revolution, transforming manufacturing, transportation, and society while expanding the British Empire across the world. In 1707, the Acts of Union united England and Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. England subsequently became the heart of the British Empire, which reached its greatest extent in the early 20th century. Britain fought in both World Wars, suffering major losses and economic difficulties. After World War II, the empire rapidly declined as many colonies gained independence. England became part of the United Kingdom alongside Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, while experiencing major social and economic changes. In 1973, the UK joined the European Economic Community, later the European Union, but voted to leave in 2016 and completed Brexit in 2020. Today, England remains the largest country within the United Kingdom, with London serving as a major global center for finance, politics, culture, and education. #History #Edit #Europe #UK #Historytok - @pabloloveslarping
