133 years ago today, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky died. Nine days earlier, he had stood in front of an orchestra in St. Petersburg and conducted the premiere of this symphony. Most great symphonies of his time ended in triumph — a blaze of brass, a final major chord. Tchaikovsky did the opposite. His last symphony ends with this: a slow lament, marked “Adagio lamentoso,” that rises in anguish, collapses, and then sinks lower and lower until only the double basses are left, fading into silence. It is music that doesn’t end so much as stop breathing. Listen to the opening theme. It sounds like one sighing melody — but no single violin section actually plays it. Tchaikovsky split it between the first and second violins, note by note, so the line seems to come from nowhere and everywhere at once. The audience at the premiere was puzzled. Tchaikovsky wasn’t. He wrote to his nephew that he considered it the best thing he had ever composed. Days later he fell ill — officially with cholera, after drinking a glass of unboiled water. Within a week he was dead, at 53. Rumors about what really happened have never gone away, and historians still argue about them. What remains is this ending. Its nickname, “Pathétique,” doesn’t mean pathetic — it means full of passion and suffering. Few pieces have ever earned a name more completely. Does a symphony have to end in hope? 🎼 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky — Symphony No. 6 in B minor “Pathétique,” Op. 74, IV.
