What is your period telling us about your fertility? Before ordering blood tests, we ask about your cycle. How regularly does your period arrive? How long do you bleed? Is it heavy or painful? Do you notice spotting between periods? These details help us decide what needs investigating. They don’t diagnose a hormone imbalance on their own. Your cycle also reflects a sequence of hormonal changes. Oestrogen rises as a follicle develops, influencing cervical mucus. After ovulation, progesterone rises and can produce a sustained increase in basal body temperature. That’s why different tracking methods give us different information: • Cervical mucus changes can help identify approaching fertile days. • Ovulation predictor kits detect an LH surge, but don’t prove an egg was released. • A sustained temperature rise can support that ovulation has already occurred, rather than predict it in advance. Bleeding alone does not always confirm ovulation, and a regular cycle cannot tell us everything about fertility. Persistent spotting, heavy bleeding, significant pain or marked changes in cycle length deserve assessment. We shouldn’t automatically label them “low progesterone” or assume they’re simply normal for you. Blood tests remain valuable. The strongest clinical picture comes from combining your history, symptoms and appropriately timed investigations. For example, when progesterone testing is indicated, it is generally timed around one week before your expected period, rather than automatically on day 21. At Nourishing Apothecary, we take the time to understand your menstrual history and fertility goals, providing individualised support alongside appropriate medical care. Book with our fertility team or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. Consultations are available at our Liverpool clinic in Sydney and Australia wide via Zoom. www.nourishingapothecary.com #MenstrualCycle #FertilityHealth #OvulationTracking #TryingToConceive #PreconceptionCare
