@umimaja1441: "Key Word Forced" FORCED 🤬 The island of Puerto Rico was first forced to speak Spanish beginning in 1493 when Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Spain, displacing the native Taino language. Conversely, after the United States acquired Puerto Rico in 1898, the U.S. government later attempted to force English instruction and Americanization onto the population through schools and official acts, starting around 1902. However, Spanish remained the dominant language of the people, and Spanish was formally restored as the primary language of instruction by 1949. ⭐Key Language Milestones in Puerto Rico * 1493–1500s: Spanish colonization began after Columbus arrived, imposing the Spanish language on the indigenous Taino people. *1898: The United States took control of Puerto Rico from Spain after the Spanish-American War under the Treaty of Paris. * 1902: The U.S. colonial administration passed the Official Languages Act and pushed English-only or English-primary education to Americanize the island. * 1949: Local resistance and high dropout rates led Commissioner Mariano Villaronga to officially decree Spanish as the primary language of instruction in public schools. *Present Day: Spanish and English are co-official languages, with Spanish remaining the primary language for over 95% of the population.
