My husband deployed when our son was a baby. He was gone for 15 months. I had a bunch of 8x10 pictures laminated and put at his eye level around the house. When my husband came home, our son pulled up his little chair at sat looking at the picture on the fridge. He would look at the fridge picture and then look at his dad in the living room, he kept doing it over and over processing that the person in the picture was the person sitting in the living room.

I hate deployments... It is so slow and sad... and lonely... Thats why I always thank Veterans and their families... they may be putting in the work overseas... but their families are putting in the work here!

Each to their own but id never want to be in this situation a couple weeks is one thing but damn, I want a man that cares about seeing their child grow up and I don’t what my children to ever think their dads not coming back. I have trauma from my father being in prison and to a child it’s exactly the same thing, dads not there, that simple, they don’t understand why they aren’t there just that they aren’t. I don’t what my children feeling like I did growing up, dad being there and then gone for over 12 months, coming back and then being ‘snatched away’ with very little notice. I, as an adult can understand that these situations are different, one being a criminal and the other being a hero for the country but I know from experience that all kids usually look up to their father and the random back and forth of dad being there and then gone again was very hard for me as a child I wouldn’t be comfortable with my partner doing this but I’m very glad that your trying to make it less traumatic for your children
