I work in Dermatology, and he is actually correct. while on accutane you dont want to use tretinoin or anything harsh due to is causing dryness. one thing i dont want people to expect is to go to the doc and say i want on accutane with mild acne, or even moderate acne and have tried no other treatments. A lot of peoples acne is due to 1. lack of skin care or 2. using dumb shit like beef tallow and all the wrong products, or just using products incorrectly. Also to think accutane is a medication that you will be able to take like he is talking about, low dose 5mg day, that wont happen. Accutane is very regulated. You have to be seen in the office every 30 days and enrolled in a program called ipledge. It's not like a normal prescription, you don't get refills, which is another reason you need to be seen every 30 days. For girls, before you start you need 2 forms of birth control, you take a pregnancy test then have to wait 30 days before even getting the medication, then have to take a pregnancy test every 30 days. You have to answer questions through ipledge within 7 days, if you don't, you start all over no matter what month you are on. This is due to a bad birth defect called Harley Quinn Syndrome. Accutane is an amazing drug when used correctly. People say "oh the side effects" truly the side effects are dryness, lips are the worst so keep vaseline on them not chapstick, some bloody nose, but that is because Accutane dries you out everywhere so keeping moisturizing nasal spray is best too. Drink Lots of Water!
People talk about suicide and things like that, there is no clear proof linking the medication causing the couple of cases. What happened is the few case studies with Accutane is this medication was created for severe cystic acne and those patients where already severely depressed, anxious, suicidal due to dealing with their acne/bullying.
