@powers_plants: Gymnocladus dioicus is the Latin name for Kentucky coffee tree. This is a large shade tree native throughout central and eastern North America. It is very adaptable to climate change conditions and if you don’t have any planted near you, this would be a great tree to add for diversity in your canopy. What do you recommend planting in neighborhoods where I have 10' on 3 sides between my neighbors houses and 20' to the street in front? I feel like I can't do any shade trees because they're all too big for the yard given to us.

in zone 6a in my personal experience Fall is not the time to plant even though everyone keeps saying that. Come Spring it's about a 60% chance they made it. I would only ever plant something in the Fall if it was a great deal end-of-season clearance that I haven't invested much in.

I’d have to find my source but I was watching something that was saying maple trees are going to be the new forests better adapted than oaks. They said maple would compete better than oak through the changing climate

I’m putting Lindens in the devils strip next year, and I don’t have room for any more big trees, so when the squirrels brought me a butternut, I gave it to a friend who has a huge property.

My fear with planting something that can get so big is the violent storms we get in PA now. We lost a gorgeous, mature maple tree from a lightening strike and high winds. That part of my yard looks naked now 🙁

They look leggy and spindly when young but grow into gorgeous shade trees. What are your thoughts on the Espresso cultivar from the habitat perspective? I know a lot of native cultivars aren’t attractive from a diversity standpoint. Just curious.

I love my native maple. I just cut down an invasive maple and I shouldnt say me. I had my son do it. . I think we’re supposed to call them northern Catalpa’s.

I had never heard of this tree but I just bought a house with a mature one! We kept finding the pods and had to look up what they were (Minneapolis area). Also inherited 3 giant native oaks. Love seeing all the birds and critters enjoying my yard

We planted a red point maple and the trunk split over the first winter. It has a few dead limbs. What can we do to stop it from doing it again this winter?

Yes! With limited yard space I was torn Bw so many native trees: hackberry, oak, Catalpas, coffee trees, river birch, quaking aspen, cottonwood.

Can you offer tips for me trying to plant an oak tree in my yard (suburban Chicago!) Neutral to basic soil. I’m thinking a white oak sapling will do best? Or a $600 2” diameter starter tree? They shoot deep tap roots first thing, right? lots of questions!
