@stayathomewoodworks: I almost ruined the finish on this dresser because I skipped ONE crucial step  When raw wood is crazy dry, stain soaks in too fast and leaves you with splotchy, uneven coverage. To save the exterior, I grabbed some pre-stain conditioner, let it sit for 15-30 minutes, and stained with the grain. The final clear coat came out so smooth you can see my reflection in it!  Do you always use pre-stain conditioner, or do you skip it?
