THEY CLIMBED THE CRANE TO STOP THE MACHINES. 🚧 This morning in Amsterdam, more than a hundred activists cut through the fence of a Microsoft data centre construction site — and some of them climbed all the way up the crane. The site: three towers of 85 metres, 78 megawatts, more than a billion euros of investment — in a city that has already banned new data centres until 2030, because its power grid is full. This project slipped through because its plans date back to 2016, before the ban. The protesters say the building will use as much electricity as every household in Amsterdam combined — and puts 30,000 planned homes at risk. Those are the campaign's own figures. Microsoft says it understands the strong feelings and respects peaceful protest, but does not condone breaking the law. The developer, Pure Data Centres, asked the protesters to leave safely — and invited them to talk instead. Riot police moved in with batons and pepper spray. The mayor banned the demonstration mid-morning, and several protesters were arrested. No injuries have been reported. By the afternoon, no work was happening on the site at all. And Amsterdam was only day one. This protest launched two days of actions in sixteen countries — and in this week's US midterm voting, Americans backed limits on data centres in 40 of 41 local contests where the question was asked, according to reports. So tell us honestly 👇 If a giant AI company came for your city's electricity and water… Would you fight back? Follow Sandy Tales for more true stories, explained. Footage: AP · Reuters · DRM News.
