@cashflowusa: 🇺🇸 ⛵ COLUMBUS DAY: THE STORY BEHIND OCTOBER 12 ❤️🤍💙 🌍 Who was Christopher Columbus? Born in 1451 in Genoa, in what is now Italy, Christopher Columbus became a sailor and navigator. He believed he could reach Asia’s valuable trading markets by sailing west across the Atlantic instead of traveling around Africa. But he greatly underestimated the distance—and did not know the Americas lay along his proposed route. 👑 A voyage supported by Spain After years of seeking support, Columbus received backing from Spain’s Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II. On August 3, 1492, he set sail with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. 🏝️ What happened on October 12, 1492? After weeks at sea, the expedition reached an island in the Bahamas. Its Indigenous inhabitants knew it as Guanahaní; Columbus called it San Salvador. He later explored Cuba and Hispaniola, believing he had reached islands near Asia. 📖 Was this the “discovery of America”? That is how the story has often been told, but the Americas were already home to Indigenous peoples with rich cultures and civilizations stretching back thousands of years. Norse explorers had also reached North America around the year 1000. Columbus reached the Caribbean, and he never landed in what is now the United States. His voyages nevertheless marked a turning point, beginning sustained contact between Europe and the Americas. 🌎 A legacy that changed the world These voyages transformed trade, migration, and cultures. They also opened the way to colonization, enslavement, and devastating disease among Indigenous communities. Remembering the whole story helps us understand the past with honesty and respect. 🇮🇹🇺🇸 Why do we observe Columbus Day? The holiday commemorates Columbus’s arrival on October 12, 1492, and became an important celebration of Italian American heritage.
