My theory is women wear functional clothes to the gym that is stylish for other women. They create community with in groups for safety. While men peacock to other men, or use their lack of clothing to take up space from women.

Sometimes I see vids of women at the gym and think (to myself) that their workout gear looks uncomfortable because my leggings all the way up my but would drive me bonkers. I’m a sweats girl lol.

I felt CRAZY doing the SPARTAN race and needing to take off my short sleeve athletic top to reveal my long line sports bra bc it was 100 degrees. Then I look up and A MAN IS CLIMBING UP THE ROPE WALL IN A SPEEDO. No shame.

I travel a lot for work, and always pack the most covering, dowdy clothes for the hotel gym. I’m talking baggy oversized shirts and full length leggings. Why? Because I’ve been cornered multiple times in a hotel gym when I’m the only other person there. My travel workout clothes are a literal safety feature, and it still isn’t enough to keep creepy men away. We’ll never wear “modest” enough clothing in their eyes.

A man at my old studio I went to used to be shirtless and wear the same pair of cut off daisy duke jean shorts every class. and the only reason I would be looking was because I couldn’t imagine something more uncomfortable than jeans in a hot yoga 😂

The prevalence of shirtless men in yoga classes when every single woman is capable of completing the same class wearing a tanktop, tshirt or sports bra. Like why do they need to be shirtless?

This conversation in the comments is a bit echo chamber-y. 👀👀 My yoga/pilates studio had both men and women in different states of undress, from head to toe coverage to practically a skimpy bathing suit. I’m one of the skimpy women (it’s 110 degrees, people) so I can’t really judge men in speedos or whatever.
