A soul wanted the power to rule the world. Instead, it became a prisoner of its own desires. What could free it from a prison it carried within? This engraving, designed by Michael Andreae for the Amsterdam 1682 edition of Jacob Böhme’s writings, interprets his “Dialogue between an Enlightened and an Unenlightened Soul.” Böhme supplies the story; Andreae’s image and accompanying explanation give it visible form. Begin with the serpent. In the dialogue, the devil presents a fiery wheel in serpent form as a power the soul could command. Hoping to become its own master, the soul turns its will away from God. The desires it awakens begin to govern it. The modern book caption calls this the “mercurial wheel of anguish,” kindled by Vulcan. Böhme uses alchemical language to describe spiritual life: its restless activity, its fire, and the conflict of desires. Four inscriptions identify the forces of captivity: wrath with fire, pride with air, envy with water, and avarice with earth. These are the pairings on this particular plate. Böhme explains their connection. Pride demands superiority. Avarice grasps at possession. Envy turns against what it cannot obtain. Wrath attacks whatever refuses to submit. The soul seeks dominion, yet becomes ruled by its own hunger. At the center, an eye weeps. Read alongside the dialogue, it most plausibly represents the suffering soul recognizing its condition. The tear suggests anguish and repentance. But what allows the soul to see? In Böhme’s account, divine light touches it first. The soul discovers its captivity because love has already begun to awaken it. Even while it feels abandoned, Christ is working within its struggle. Around the eye, stars and concentric bands suggest enclosure within the changeable world of nature. Andreae’s explanation says the soul’s paradisal joy has become “Sternen-Qual”—torment under the stars. Above this enclosure, the letters spell PARADEIS: Paradise. At the opening stand a cross, a radiant bird, and a triangle. The bird is best read as the dove of the Holy Spirit. The triangle most likely carries Trinitarian meaning. A related explanation in Andreae’s illustration series connects the cross with the power of the threefold number and spiritual rebirth.
