I love this. My old friends all told me not to marry my wife or I’d be a hermit, she’s been there for me in ways they never could have comprehended.

Daemon Blackfyre and Aegor
Daemon Blackfyre and Aegor "Bittersteel" Rivers are two of the most martial and symbolically charged figures in the history of A Song of Ice and Fire. Together, they represent a failed heroic ideal: the beautiful rebel-king and the iron-willed lieutenant who kept his cause alive long after its first defeat. Daemon Blackfyre was the legitimised bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen, later remembered as the central claimant in the First Blackfyre Rebellion. He was famed for his extraordinary beauty, charisma, courtesy, and peerless skill at arms. To his followers, he embodied the perfect warrior-prince: brave, generous, noble in bearing, and seemingly born to rule. His possession of the ancestral Valyrian sword Blackfyre gave his claim a powerful symbolic legitimacy, allowing many to see him as the true heir of Targaryen kingship rather than a mere rebel. Aegor Rivers, called Bittersteel, was another of Aegon IV’s bastard sons, but he was a very different figure. Where Daemon was golden, magnetic, and almost mythic, Bittersteel was severe, resentful, disciplined, and relentless. He was not merely a warrior but a political engine: a man of grudge, ambition, and loyalty sharpened into something dangerous. After Daemon’s death, Bittersteel preserved the Blackfyre cause in exile, founding the Golden Company and transforming a lost rebellion into a dynastic vendetta that haunted Westeros for generations. Their relationship can be compared quite elegantly to Achilles and Eudorus from Greek heroic tradition, though the parallel is not exact. Daemon Blackfyre resembles Achilles in his heroic glamour. Like Achilles, Daemon is remembered first as a supreme warrior whose personal excellence draws men to him. Both figures possess an almost radiant martial charisma: they are not simply commanders, but living ideals of aristocratic war-culture. Achilles is the greatest fighter among the Greeks; Daemon is remembered as one of the greatest swordsmen Westeros ever produced. Both also carry a tragic aura. Their greatness is inseparable from doom. Achilles is fated to die young in pursuit of glory, while Daemon’s rebellion ends with his death on the Redgrass Field, where the dream of Blackfyre kingship is shattered. Bittersteel resembles Eudorus in the sense of being the loyal subordinate and martial companion who operates beneath the shadow of a greater heroic figure. Eudorus, one of Achilles’ commanders among the Myrmidons, represents organised military service under the supreme champion. He does not eclipse Achilles, but he helps give structure to Achilles’ force. In the same way, Bittersteel is not the shining ideal around whom songs naturally gather; he is the hard military backbone of the Blackfyre cause
