So I’m really stuck on my husband is green. What the hell does that mean? Is it a horse term?

People do give horses away. This is not unheard of. It’s often cheaper to give a horse away than feed, shoe and vet upkeep. Often times it’s older horses that the original owner needs to get rid of but they don’t want to send it off to the killer sale. All that said… there are few things more expensive than a free horse.

If you can’t pay for gas to deliver a horse, then you cannot afford a horse.

Horse pro here: this is common but bold. And people do give away free horses but that’s the only thing that will be free. The horse will have something wrong with it and cost big bucks to fix. The cost of care is minimum $200/mo and that’s in the cheapest parts of the country.

I’ve got two “free” horses. I went into it knowing they would both cost me a fortune in vet fees. Nobody is giving away broke, sound riding horses. 😆

Free horses aren’t unheard of but there is a reason it is free! Either unbroke, unsound, too old to ride, too insane to ride so on

there's a little nuance here with the free horse thing but here's my thoughts: usually you're going to spend more money on the upkeep of a horse (especially a riding horse) than you will actually buying one. My cheapest (up front) horse cost me almost 6 times his purchase price in the first three months I owned him from vet bills, feed bills (he was underweight), farrier (needed corrective shoeing), saddle fitting, etc.
Usually the only horses people are giving away are super old, super expensive to keep, or unsound for riding for whatever reason (and the ones people don't want to put down but don't want to pay for anymore, and they refuse to do the right thing). Especially going into winter and on tough hay years (like this year) you see a LOT of people offering "companion" horses for free because people can't afford them and/or don't want to pay for an unrideable horse. Basically, I have a lot of feelings for both sides of this lol

I have received three free horses in my life, but I never sought them out or asked anyone for handouts. One when I was a teenager (I was a retirement home for a senior ex police horse who belonged to my schools resource officer who knew I was a rider), and two as an adult (one was a baby horse/pony cross from a friend that we still have and one was from another client of our farrier - another older boy, we were a quiet retirement home where he was a therapy horse with some very light riding. We sadly just lost him a couple months ago). None of these horses ended up being cheap in the end, as no horse really is. But we didn’t expect them to be and knew what the costs would be going in.

People clearly don’t realize how expensive it is to keep a horse. If you need it free, you can’t afford the ongoing stable fees

You make fun but I was given free horses several times because people don't research before they buy.

Horses are EXPENSIVE to upkeep!!!! I would never give a horse to someone who can’t afford to buy one. They just screams to me that they can’t afford the monthly maintenance. If I knew someone who was wanting a new horse and they fit the needs of my horse I would consider gifting them, but an established relationship would be required.

horse girl here - this happens, but horses that are free always come w big issues. also the cost of the horse is so minor compared to the care. 15 years ago i bought a horse for $1500 and probably paid over $100k over those 15 years in care.

I do dressage, grew up eventing, owned horses for 30+yrs now. This is fairly common but there is a rule in horses. Green + green = black& blue!!!! Most of those posts have “I’ve never owned a horse or worked on a farm” energy. If the horse is free and young it will likely kill you. If it’s free and old it’s looking for a retirement home.

The cheapest thing about a horse is actually buying it. Everything after that is insanely expensive.

I've never purchased a horse before, but from what I understand, they are quite expensive. If these people can't afford to purchase the horse itself I've very concerned about how they will be able to financially support these horses.

If you cant afford to buy the animal and up front supplies, you cannot afford the animals ongoing costs. Let alone vet bills

I’m not a horse person but my sister is a farm person. The neighboring town flooded a few years ago and she opened her pastures up for people to move their farm animals away from the flood. She ended up with 3 horses someone didn’t want anymore and her girls got interested in riding so they kept them. I have no idea how common this is.

Horses here in my area are only free or cheap if they are “project” horses and need training, or rehab, or something. And to keep them in a pasture with no stall is at least $300 a month. To board with a stall is $450-$1000 a month, depending on where the facility is located and what it offers. I know because we went through this to find a horse to buy and a place to board. Many boarding facilities have wait lists. It was hard to find a place with an opening within an hours drive and I live near areas with lots of boarding facilities around. They were all booked. Horses have to have vaccines twice a year, and an annual Coggins test, so there is a vet bill twice a year for a healthy horse. And the vet charges a trip fee to come to the barn, so you have to have a horse trailer and take the horse to the vet’s office if you don’t want to pay the trip fee. Horses also have to see the farrier to trim their hooves about every 5-6 weeks. Without horse shoes, it’s about $55 and with shoes it’s usually about $110. They also have to have their teeth done annually or so. And yes, there’s a trip fee charged for that unless you trailer the horse to them. These are the most basic expenses. In my area, a safe to ride older horse without a show pedigree or something that is advertised for sale by owner online will be between $2500-$4000 dollars.

@Circle Dog: You’d be surprised how many of my mother’s horses were free or well under $1000. They never stay free. Horse care is outrageously expensive. I want nothing to do with it and my horse-filled childhood was wasted on me.
