Had a debt collector call me for a medical bill. I asked if they had been given any information about it, they had. I said it was a HIPPA violation and I would not be paying. They never called again and I was just talking out my ass.

Incredible advice. As someone who has previously worked in debt collection. Most companies do not receive the original contract from the bank. So asking for proof of debt is typically the best way to confirm if you are required to pay a debt. If they cannot provide proof of debt they cannot take legal action against you.
