I’m a child psychiatrist, and I hear a version of this question often, usually from a place of real love and real worry. I told him to say nothing, that she absolutely knows. Here’s what the research actually shows, and it surprises most parents. Commenting on a teen’s weight, even gently, even out of concern for their health, doesn’t lead to healthier habits. Dieting itself doesn’t reliably lead to weight loss either. A 5-year study of over 2,500 teenagers found that dieting predicted weight gain over time, not loss, driven partly by more binge eating and less physical activity down the line. (Neumark-Sztainer et al., 2007) Here’s what I told him instead. Leave her weight and her body out of the conversation entirely. Focus on behaviors the whole family does together, regardless of anyone’s size: regular balanced meals, enough sleep, movement she actually enjoys. Ask about her mood and her energy, not her plate. If something feels physically off, that’s a conversation for her to have with her pediatrician, not one for the dinner table. The instinct to protect her health is the right one. The way to act on it isn’t about her weight at all. Save this before you have this conversation with your own kid.
