At 74 my observation over the past years is that, given the quality, ability and performance of our home grown politicians, the prospect of "faceless bureaucrats" in Brussels is less scary. We have in reality no more influence over home grown incompetents than we do "bureaucrats in a foreign land", the only difference is that it is our misplaced "island pride" that puts our politicians there.
