Wouldn’t the interviewer view you as a short term employee since you left your prior company after you solved the problem. They’ll probably think you’ll get bored fast and move on. Just say there was a restructure and it affected your growth. Restructures happen so rarely in a company and it’s 100% out of your control and employers know the consequences …

Thank you for this! this is helpful. The truth is I'm leaving because of a layoff. I LOVED my job. I think phrasing it like this keeps it about my skills and less about "the one that got away" 😂

If the job was challenging you and supporting your growth you wouldn’t be leaving. You’re saying to answer a question with a goal you’ve achieved which isn’t answering the question. What it’s saying is, as soon as you fulfill your purpose there you’ll look for something else

That helps if you’re executive level or higher but the vast majority aren’t that high up.

I never apply to jobs, but recruiters reach out to me, so my answer is "i wasnt looking to leave my current role, but your recruiting department made your company seem very desirable" that usually wins them over.

I saw this role at company X and I was really excited to see the opening because I love the mission and I would love to be a part of it. I could bring xyz to the role and organization.

The best interview I had recently was with a woman who actually paid attention to my resume. She saw my experience and was aware of what was going on in the news. She understood I was unable to comment officially. Instead, she gave me an out by phrasing her question this way: I’d ask you why you’re trying to leave your current position, but I don’t want to incriminate you and/or put you in a position to violate any terms of secrecy. Instead, if I were to call your current supervisor, would they advocate for you? It was very mindful given the position I’m in.

How about we act like adults, stop games and just mean what we say? Wouldn’t that be nice? But then recruiters would need to be good at their jobs 🤣

The real reason that I was leaving was because I hadn't gotten a raise in 3 years and I was being micro managed, I told the interviewer that I started there fresh out of college and learned so much, but felt that I reached the cap of what I could learn in that position and was ready for a bigger challenge. I got the job and am much happier 😂

What if I was recently laid off due to my division being sold to another company? I had a great experience at my previous firm and worked there for almost 7 years but they restructured and had a large lay off in late September

@Lyss Looch: This response doesn’t really work though for every job. What you’re saying is more so a response from someone in senior leadership. What if it’s a person in middle management where there’s a bunch of these middle managers? Those middle managers weren’t brought in to solve an issue. These middle managers were brought in since there was a hole in the team that needed to be filled for account coverage
