Follow me then comment "STORY" and I'll send you the paper, the code, and my checklist for writing that doesn't read like AI. Researchers at the University of Maryland and Google DeepMind just found a way to spot AI writing without reading a single word. They look at the shape of the story, and it works 93% of the time. Here's what they found: 1. They took 10,272 human short stories, reversed a prompt out of each one, and had Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, and Kimi write the same prompt. 61,608 stories total. 2. They ignored the prose and measured 304 structural features: how tension builds, how many plot threads run, how the ending lands, how hard the theme gets explained. 3. Structure alone separated human from AI with a 93.2% score. Style edits don't fix it because the skeleton is still AI. 4. AI stories cluster in one spot. One main character, one clean track, an ending that spells the moral out for you. Human stories wander and leave things unsaid. 5. Every model has a fingerprint. Claude barely escalates tension and lands quiet endings. GPT leans on dreams and gossip. Gemini describes characters from the outside and drifts dark. What you get: ✅ The StoryScope paper (COLM 2026) and the open-source code ✅ The 10 structural dimensions the detector reads ✅ Each model's tells so you know what to cut ✅ My checklist for breaking the AI shape in your own writing Why this matters: Everyone is hunting em dashes and the word "delve." The detector doesn't care about either. If your story has one tidy arc and explains itself at the end, it reads as AI no matter how you word it.
