The CIA’s satellite surveillance program began during the Cold War with CORONA, the United States’ first successful photographic reconnaissance satellite program. Developed jointly by the CIA and U.S. Air Force in the late 1950s, CORONA was designed to photograph areas that were difficult or impossible to monitor from the ground, particularly the Soviet Union and Communist China. The technology was remarkable for its time. CORONA satellites photographed targets from orbit, then returned exposed film to Earth inside capsules that were recovered in midair. After several failed missions, the first successful flight in August 1960 produced more imagery of the Soviet Union than all previous U-2 overflights combined. The intelligence gathered helped the U.S. assess Soviet missile sites, military bases, submarines, aircraft production and other strategic capabilities. CORONA eventually became one of the most important sources of intelligence on Soviet strategic forces and even helped support verification of arms-control agreements. The program operated until 1972, completing 145 launches. Its successors, including GAMBIT and HEXAGON, introduced increasingly sophisticated reconnaissance capabilities and laid the foundation for later American spy-satellite systems.
