I had a neighbour who moved to our area years before I came because he was there when it happened and he was digging for the children. After it was all over he said he couldn't walk the streets anymore without hearing the roar of the slide and the cries and screams of the parents. He spent the rest of his life "alone" because he couldn't bear the idea of loss and not having control again. He kept journals in his trunk and his very last one, the last page. Was nothing but apologies to the children for not being able to dig them out fast enough. He wasnt even a professional... he just started digging. He said all the time that he can never forgive himself. It was so heartbreaking watching him slowly deteriorate especially when he got Alzheimer's and we would find him in our local field at all hours of the day digging with his hands yelling "I'm coming kids I'm coming!" ... He was just digging at the grass 😭 It was SO heartbreaking

that’s how my grandmother and aunt passed away. she was in her late 20s and she was 6 years old. their family dug them out for 3 days and found them holding each other.

My dad was welsh. He told us about what happened and took us to aberfan when we were kids. We were born in england. but he made sure we knew what happened. My dad died 2 years ago. I now live in Aberfan. I love the memorials but we need to do more to respect their deaths. This needs to be something that brings out the community to be together ❤️
