In the written and spoken text of the New Testament Gospels, the words Yahweh or Yahuah never appear on the lips of Jesus in the Greek manuscripts. Instead, His recorded prayers and speech overwhelmingly favor intimate and relational terms. While Eli and Abba are His most famous direct addresses to God in the original Aramaic, a closer look at the languages He spoke explains how the Hebrew name Yahweh relates to His life. The Divine Names Jesus Used In the Gospels, when Jesus spoke directly to or about God, the text records Him using a distinct set of terms: 1. Abba (Father): This was Jesus’s primary, defining way of addressing God. Used in Aramaic in the Garden of Gethsemane ("Abba, Father, all things are possible for you..."), it denotes an intimate, family relationship. In the Greek text of the Gospels, this is translated dozens of times as Pater (Father). 2. Eli / Eloi (My God): Spoken by Jesus from the cross ("Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?"), this is the Aramaic/Hebrew word for "My God". 3. Theos (God) & Kyrios (Lord): In the daily teaching and public interactions recorded in Greek, Jesus used Theos (God) and Kyrios (Lord). Why didn't Jesus say "Yahweh"? By the 1st century CE, a deeply ingrained Jewish tradition of Tetragrammaton avoidance had taken hold. To avoid accidentally violating the commandment against taking the Lord's name in vain, Jews stopped pronouncing the four-letter sacred name (YHWH) out loud. Instead, whenever a Jew encountered YHWH in scripture, they spoke the substitute word Adonai (Hebrew for "Lord") or Mar (Aramaic for "Lord"). Because the Gospels were written in Greek, the authors translated this spoken substitution directly into the Greek word Kyrios. The Hidden Presence of "Yahweh" in Jesus's Life Even though Jesus didn't explicitly utter the phonetic word Yahweh, the name was fundamentally central to His identity in two distinct ways: His Own Name: The actual name Jesus was called by his family and disciples was the Hebrew/Aramaic name Yeshua (Joshua). Yeshua is a compound word that literally means "Yahweh is Salvation". Every time someone called out His name, they were actively invoking the name Yahweh. Quoting Scripture: When Jesus read from the Isaiah scroll in the synagogue (Luke 4) or quoted the Deuteronomy scriptures to Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4), He was reading texts that contained the Tetragrammaton YHWH. Depending on how strictly He followed the custom of His era, He would have spoken either the traditional substitute Adonai / Kyrios or—as some minority views suggest—the name itself as the high priest did. Ultimately, Jesus shifted the focus away from the formal, exact pronunciation of the Old Testament name of God, choosing instead to teach His followers to approach God through the personal relationship of "Our Father."
